Like Father, Like Son is the prologue’s sword lesson, and it is the shortest quest in the chapter. The journal files it third in the Prologue and places it in Laslea Glen, the opening region at a rough level 1–8 band. Its introduction flags the unease underneath the exercise: “My father insists we practise sword fighting. We haven’t done that in ages. Something is up.”
Where the quest sits
There is no quest giver to find — the beat starts at home with Pieter and moves out to a clearing where the two of them train. The journal gives the quest no named objectives beyond the drill itself, which is deliberate: this is the game’s one scripted combat tutorial before the prologue turns violent in Bad Blood.
Journal objectives
The journal records these two entries, in this order:
- Follow Pieter — “Dad insists I follow him to the clearing where we train.”
- Train with Pieter — “I’ll try to prove to my father I know my way around a sword.”
What it teaches
The drill is the game’s own on-ramp to its combat and progression systems. By the time the first act is running, The Blood of Dawnwalker gives you the full day and night system, the Blood Hunger mechanic, and all three skill trees in working order, and the three trees are Swordmastery, Witchcraft and Vampirism. A training fight with Pieter is where those systems first ask anything of you, which is why the journal lists it as an objective rather than letting it pass as a cutscene. Picking a primary tree early is the habit the rest of the game rewards.
Before you go
This sits between Withering Away and Sacred Covenant in the journal’s fixed order, and it carries no prerequisite of its own. The region band is the game’s gentlest, so the training fight cannot strand you; treat it as the place to learn the combat vocabulary before the prologue’s later chaos. The combat basics guide is the companion read if you want the systems behind the drill, and the early game guide explains what the prologue hands off to.
