Midnight Reckoning is the first quest of the journal’s endgame chapter, The coronation, and it is the route into Greifberg Castle that does not go through the front gate. The journal records Rockfalls as its region — a roughly 10–16 band, though the quest itself is endgame content. The introduction is one line: “It’s time. Together with Lacra we’re going to put an end to Brencis’s foul ritual and his rule.”

Where the quest sits

Lacra opens the quest and the journal gives her a one-night delay before the assault can start, which is the entry that reads “Talk to Lacra in one day”. From there the route is underground: the ruins under Svartrau, an ancient temple, the castle dungeons, and up into a keep where the journal puts Ambrus, Bakir and Xanthe in that order before Brencis. This is the endgame path, so the vassal order guide explains why those three names appear here even if you have already dealt with their arcs.

Journal objectives

The journal records these nineteen entries, in this order:

  1. Talk to Lacra in one day — “I should return to speak with Lacra the next night.”
  2. Talk with Lacra when you’re ready to attack Brencis — “Everything’s been said and done – whenever I’m ready to go after Brencis, Lacra will be waiting for me in the abandoned fort.”
  3. Find an entrance to the ruins — “We’re in the house from Isbrand’s memory. It’s connected to the ruins under Svartrau – we need to find the passage.”
  4. Make your way through the ruins — “We’ve found the ruins under Svartrau – this is how we get to Brencis’s castle.”
  5. Proceed through the temple — “We’ve reached a place reminiscent of an ancient temple. We’re likely getting close to the castle.”
  6. Defeat Ambrus — “Brencis’s newest lackey decided to try to stop us. He won’t.”
  7. Defeat Ambrus’s soldiers — “I’ve disposed of Ambrus ahead of time, but his loyal lackeys still want to stop us. Good luck.”
  8. Exit the temple — “There is nothing left to do down here and the entrance to the castle is right ahead. That’s where we must go.”
  9. Make your way through the dungeon — “We’ve entered Greifberg through the dungeons, avoiding the strongest defences. The only way is up.”
  10. Defeat Bakir — “The mad boyar came to stop us. It was his final mistake.”
  11. Defeat the Likho — “The spirits of Anachora are crossing the veil and reaching the castle. We must get rid of them.”
  12. Make your way to the throneroom — “Brencis is in the throneroom – we have to get there as quickly as possible.”
  13. Defeat the gargoyle — “A flying abomination attacked us. We need to dispose of it before we can proceed.”
  14. Get into the castle using your vrakhiri abilities — “We can’t get into the castle through the main entrance. We’ll have to scale the floating rocks to find another way in. This is insanity.”
  15. Defeat Xanthe — “Boyaress Xanthe arrived to protect Brencis – she wants to stop us. We want her dead.”
  16. Defeat the enemies — “I need to defeat the enemies standing in my way.”
  17. Defeat the soldiers — “Some of Brencis’s soldiers are still resisting. We have to slice through them, there is no other way.”
  18. Defeat Brencis — “At last, here he is. And here he dies.”
  19. Escape the trap — “Xanthe’s black magic has warped a part of the castle to stop our progress. We need to get out of her trap.”

Before you go

This is the endgame. The journal assumes the Isbrand thread is finished — entry three uses the house from his memory as the way in — and it expects you to have settled the three vassal arcs, since Ambrus, Bakir and Xanthe all appear on the route. Bring a full kit and a build you have committed to; the mid-game walkthrough covers what the chapter asks of you beforehand.
