What Hunts the Night is the quest that turns the missing-scout thread into a monster hunt, and it is where the gargoyle mystery starts. The journal files it under The thirty days and records Svartrau City as its journal region — an NPC band of roughly 15–25. The introduction is a partnership offer: “Crake wishes to work with me to uncover what sort of monsters Brencis is creating.”
Where the quest sits
Crake is the quest giver and the companion the journal keeps alongside Coen, and the step list runs from a Neustadt lookout and a trail of blood to an abandoned Middens warehouse and finally to St. Teotim’s Church at night. It ends with the winged creature, an inscription found in its jaws, and Crake’s escape from an ambush in which Sara is killed. What the inscription leads to is the subject of What Moves the Dead.
Journal objectives
The journal records these thirteen entries, in this order:
- Report back to Crake — “I found out what happened to the missing scouts, but Crake won’t be too happy about it.”
- Meet Crake and Sara in front of St. Teotim’s Church at night — “Crake and Sara will meet me at night in front of St. Teotim’s Church in Middens. We must find out why the dying scout pointed me there of all places.”
- Follow Crake and Sara — “No signs of the guards. We can move forward to investigate the church.”
- Open church gate from the other side — “Something is blocking the church gate. I can go over the top, but Crake and Sara need to enter in a more traditional way.”
- Investigate the churchyard — “We need to search the churchyard for clues. There must be something here that will help us figure out this whole mess.”
- Inspect the monster’s remains — “Boyan’s ramblings were no fever dream – the creature is real, a bloody winged monstrosity. Perhaps its remains will provide some clue as to how it came into existence.”
- Help Crake escape the ambush — “Everything’s gone to hell. Sara is dead, and soldiers ambushed me and Crake out of nowhere. We have to run!”
- Open the gate from the other side — “We’ve hit a locked gate. I need to open it for Crake.”
- Help Crake investigate the scouts’s deaths — “Crake wants to know what monster – possibly Brencis’s creation – slaughtered his men. He needs my help to find out the truth… and stay alive.”
- Show the inscription to Crake — “I discovered an inscription clutched in the monster’s jaws. It’s written in a language I don’t recognise, but maybe Crake will know what it means.”
- Check the belltower doors — “That black trail leads to the belltower doors. I wonder what hides behind them…”
- Defeat the monster — “While investigating a lead in St. Teotim’s church, we were attacked by a winged monster. We must kill this abomination.”
- Investigate clues in the attic — “The scouts’s lookout post was located in the attic. I must search it for clues about what happened to them.”
Before you go
The city’s 15–25 band is the only gate, and the quest is a night operation: the journal explicitly sets the St. Teotim’s meeting after dark, so time your approach. The monster fight is the difficulty spike, and the boss compendium is the reference for what the game’s named creatures do. The Crake page and Svartrau guide are the companion reads.
